June 27, 2012 - Peaches and Cream
"Peaches and Cream"
Originally aired on June 27, 2012
In this episode,
Farm Bureau's Voices of Agriculture
host Reggie Hall brings you our Peaches and Cream edition. As the peach is the Palmetto State's official fruit and milk is the Palmetto State's official beverage, we thought it only fitting to combine them both.
We travel to the heart of Peach Country in Ridge Spring and Monetta, SC where Titan Farms and Watsonia Farms hold reign. Jerry Watson of Watsonia Farms talks to us about the history and heritage this delicious fruit has brought to him and his family, and then we travel up the road to talk with Chalmers Carr at Titan Farms. At Titan, they grow more peaches there than the entire state of Georgia, even though Georgia claim to be the "Peach State."
Then we travel to McBee, SC closer to South Carolina's coast where we find Kemp McLeod who shows us how hail cannons and wind machines are beneficial to his peaches, including the famous Mac's Pride brand.
Going up the interstate to Spartanburg County, we talk with Paul Abbott of Abbott Farms about how he and his family have found a growing niche of traveling customers who stop by his markets to pick up delectable peach products.
As far as cream goes, we visit Newberry native Kevin Satterwhite at his dairy. There we see the great care he takes for his animals and the quality of milk that is sent out with each truckload.
